Summary
Students at the GRILL® created a simulator where the user completes a a shooting task under the influence of customizable laser dazzle configurations, using a prop rifle to engage quasi-random threat target sequences.
The simulation also includes a virtual representation of many commonly used laser eye protection (LEP) goggles, allowing laser dazzle mitigation methods to be examined.

Outcomes and Additional Information
This project is designed for the NATO SET-249 task force, consisting of researchers from AFRL RHDO (Optical Radiation Bioeffects Branch), the Royal Military Academy of Belgium, and the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics in Germany.
The digitized simulation of an established shooting research experiment needed to include aspects and output related to laser exposure vs. shooting performance, the influence of LEP on mitigating laser effects, and comparing results between real-world and XR environments. The user’s performance and actions are continuously tracked and logged throughout the simulation.
The realistic dazzle effects feature simulations of after-images and scotoma. The customizable presets for the laser include power, wavelength, and distance. The students 3D printed a prop M4A1 MWS Assault Rifle with modular controller mounting system for a more realistic shooting experience.
Future work includes desktop support, applying the simulation within a realistic scenario, and adding humanoid targets and distractors.
Demo video of the project, also featured in the YouTube presentation.
