VISTA – Virtual Instruction in Surveying and Terrain Assessment – is a virtual reality (VR) project that supports training new Department of the Air Force Geobase Program personnel in geodetic and geometric survey operations with a specific focus on the setup of the total station.
Summary
The GRILL® scholars were challenged to create a VR program for training new personnel on conducting geodetic and geometric survey operations. VR was chosen to improve ease of instruction.
The project included creating realistic models of surveying equipment. The virtual environment had to assign real-world tasks to the user as well as track performance and identify errors.

Outcomes and Additional Information
The team had to model survey equipment, including a total station, tripod, tribach, bubble level, and leveling gears. The virtual equipment had to be realistic in terms of function and setup.
The training includes a tutorial with task-based learning via a double whiteboard setup, showing current tasking, a progress bar, and reporting.
Future work will include implementing surveying functionality, adding more equipment and models, and additional training tasks.
Demo video of the project, also featured in the YouTube presentation.
